These are part of a series in which I explored making images about birds without using birds in any of my photos.

I really don’t see a connection to birds here. There is a connection of flight to birds, but birds are not the only things which fly. I don’t mean to discourage you but the paper airplanes replicate air planes. The hands in the image also discourage this metaphor.
Comment by Pedro Romano May 5, 2009 @ 6:30 pmI would agree that these images seem to be more about the motion / activity of birds. If this is to be a series about birds, I would try to think about objects and materials that relate more closely to birds as well as how these items could be photographed to represent birds.
You have used color and motion well in these images– you have an interesting idea for this project… just keep thinking about how you could evolve it and push it forward.
Comment by Sarah Ripp May 8, 2009 @ 5:27 pmI disagree, the connection between flying, as well as the correlation to sailing. If you have ever sailed you’ve seen a sea gull. I like that the scene takes place in a pot hole. It is construction season in Michigan, and I always see those urban vultures in the Meijer parking lots.
Comment by jesse May 13, 2009 @ 9:49 pmI really enjoy these photos together. There is something innocent and refreshing about the contrast between the two. When your young its so easy for your imagination to take flight and sail away in simple ways and I feel like you have captured that childhood essence in the colors and subject matter.
